Our Apprenticeship Programme offers young Malawians the opportunity to live, learn, and work at Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre for 6-months. This experience culminates with a Design Certificate and a specifically tailored management plan.
The apprentices follow a 24 week schedule, with 2 weeks vacation over the course of 6-months
- Week 1: Orientation: Introduction to Permaculutre, Agro-ecology, and community-based food environment, food and nutrition security
- Week 2: Soil Management: Soil Health, Compost Making
- Week 3: Water Management: Water Harvesting, Contour Planting, Aquifer Basics
- Week 4: Orchards and ‘Food Forests’: Guilds, Applied Ecology, Fruit Production
- Week 5: Staples and Pulses: ‘Munda’ Design and Care, Alternative Grains, Transition from Chemical Fertilizers to Organic Production
- Weeks 6-20: Commercial Vegetable Production: Designing, Maintaining and Caring for a large-scale organic horticultural system for income and health
- Weeks 21-23: Design Process for Project Site
- Week 24: Final Presentations and Graduation
The end result is a comprehensive management plan, specifically tailored to the organization they will return to and general knowledge in community based environment, food, and nutrition security.
