Founded in 2009, Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre, is a demonstration site for the Kusamala Institute of Agriculture & Ecology showcasing sustainable solutions towards environment, food and nutrition security in Malawi, Southern Africa.
What We Do
We use the Centre to demonstrate, teach, and promote solutions for environment, food and nutrition security using agro-ecological techniques and principles of permaculture design. We are committed to demonstrating that Malawi already possesses the resources necessary for achieving sustainable economic development and community based food and nutrition security.
The Centre offers more than just a demonstration, it works as a functional farm providing the financial and food needs of our staff, interns and volunteers. We are working towards self-sufficiency and sell surplus organic produce to Kumbali Country Lodge, restaurants and shops in the Lilongwe area and run a weekly veg box scheme.
Through our umbrella organization, The Kusamala Institute of Agriculture & Ecology, we partner with other NGOs, Governments, UN-agencies, and Malawian Ministries to conduct projects in community-based environment, food and nutrition security using the concepts that make Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre a successful demonstration model.
Why We Do It
Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre was founded in the belief that Malawi is a rich country. With nearly 600 documented food species, a 12 month growing season, the world’s ninth largest lake, several substantial rivers and more than 80% of the population practicing agriculture, we know that Malawi has the resources necessary for sustainable livelihoods and nutritional independence.
In a country where farmers are risk-adverse, demonstration has been shown to increase the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. The Centre exists because of the need to demonstrate how to use the available resources to meet the needs for food, shelter, energy, and community in ways that improve quality of life and productivity of individuals as well as the environment.
